Beginning today, I'll be away in Costa Rica volunteering at the Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary for four weeks!

I know this is me being extremely repetitive, but I thought it'd be appropriate to make an official "away from blog" post to excuse my lack of postings during the month of May and June. I will try to post a few images of my future sketches (and maybe some of the sloths!) since I'll be sketching alotalotalotalotalot!

The image above is my now completed sketchbook I made for the trip (I'll post finished photos of the sketchbook later) and the rest of the dookie I've been trying to put together before I left this morning.

Sloth apron!

I'm on an apron kick, and I found some awesome remnant pieces of fabric to make this SASSY SLOTHY APRON!

I think I'll be sewing aprons. A lot more. In the future. They're just so fun to sew! Look forward to seeing aprons like this for sale. I would like to make some more sloth printed items and donate some of the money I make from them to the Sanctuary. We'll see how things go!

I'm going to Costa Rica soon! I'm going to Costa Rica now, actually. (Blogging from the airport cause there ain't much to doodoo) So in the spirit of my upcoming/present adventure to the Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, I decided to print a sloth to take with me on my trip! I'll be volunteering at the Sanctuary for 4 weeks, so don't expect much more posts after this. I'll have my hands filled...with slothhhss!

The design was a bit spontaneous, in that the femur I decided to include in the image wasn't so much thought out and more so just a visual solution to not wanting to draw a tree. Why not a bone?! It was probably inspired by all the bones I have behind my bed. Any-who, I later came to a symbolic conclusion about my subconsciously conceptual inclusion of the femur!

The femur is often a representation of strength and support, and I feel the connection between the sloth and femur is representative of my relationship with the sloth, as well as my future interaction with the sloth. As much as they are a support for myself, I hope to be a support for them. They've sort of become my "power animal" in the sense that I find myself and my work relating to various attributions of the sloth. The best way to describe this image, is for me to imagine that if I was to be a member of a gang, the gang would be called The Tough Sloths, and this image would be on our flag. Watch out, I'm a tough sloth!

A while ago my friend Mel and I decided to throw up some news print, set up some mirrors and draw ourselves in charcoal. I don't remember what inspired the act, but I need to admit that I don't think I've drawn a realistic human figure since 11th grade in High School, let alone a self portrait. It was intimidating!

However, I was really pleased with what I did, and considering all opposing factors (never liked drawing people, never very good at drawing people, not used to drawing so large, and this was larger than life sized) it was really fun! I think I'll try to get into the habit of drawing for life a bit more. I miss it.

The head is large, ain't got no hand...but whhhaaatevvva!

Ta-daaaa! My bronze sculptures of the twin crystals have reached the near end of this journey, with the exception of some extra polishing in the near future. The gates were cut, their bodies were filed and grinded and polished, and here they are! A little rough, but I like crystalline/mineral-like textures that arise in the casually filed appearance.

I didn't paint the faces on, because I thought adding the other medium to the bronze would feel disconnected. They don't really need faces either; I like considering them as creatures in the past who are now solidified in this crystal-like material and are more so objects or minerals rather than organisms. I'm considering carving little wooden masks for them, but that won't be any time soon if I choose to do so.

Pho Monster in the graffiti tunnel!

I got bored Monday night, because I had just finished my last class of the year and everyone else was studying for shit and I just wanted to go out and do something fun to celebrate!

So I decided to do my first paint job in the graffiti tunnel on campus that night. I've never really painted with spray paint before, except for a little practice run when I first got my set of paints, so this is definitely a new and unfamiliar medium for me. It was really fun, and I was painting next to a guy who was tagging the tunnel, and he was pretty neeaaaattt. We ended up talking quite a bit, so now I have a graffiti friend I guess, lolololol.

I painted the pho monster, blue, just because I had a lot of blue.

It took longer than I think it should have, but for a first go, I think it was pretty good! Next time I'll understand layering better, and what should come first in terms of colors and the overlapping of features. The nose was a good moment for me.

Next time, I'm throwin' up a sloth. Slothz 4 lyfe!!

Sweet potato noodles with shiitake and tofu!

AHH, I wish I took note of this recipe, wrote down how much I used of each ingredient, because it was SO GOOD! I love Dangmyeon, or sweet potato noodles (or cellophane noodles, or glass noodles), because they're clear and fun to eat and so delicious. I made this dish pretty quickly, and I'll try to replicate it later and post a recipe.

I haven't posted recipes in the past because I think of my food posts to be more along the lines of food inspirations..rather than recipes. Meaning that I hope whatever it is I cook and post more so inspires the mixing of flavors, techniques in how to cook an ingredient and what order to cook it in, etc. Rather than saying this is what I made and this is how you can make it!

Oh man, don't get me wrong, I love to follow a good recipe, but more recently I've been looking at recipes just for the sake of getting inspiration. I'll look at a pad thai recipe and see what's used and in what amounts for the sauce, and what's cooked in what order, but aside from that I eye ball it and use only what I have on hand instead of going out to buy a certain rice wine or whatever the recipe calls for. But if I'm looking to make something traditional, such as kimchi or tom yum goong (veganized), then I'll definitely follow a recipe.

SORRY FOR THE LONG EXPLANATION!

Ok, so the sauce base for this was soy sauce, miso paste, rice wine vinegar, and some shiitake broth that I gathered after soaking dried shiitakes, and a little drop of hoisin, I think. I first fried the tofu in oil till golden brown, then added the shiitake mushrooms and onions, fried it a bit more, and then added some sauce to simmer a bit. I cooked the noodles, threw em' in the pan, some more sauce, simmer doowwnnnn, and DONE.

A very light, sweet and seaweedy salty flavor, but the shiitake definitely plays a big role in this dish.

Brown rice cakes and Sweet Potato; so easy, so good!

My Korean friend had me and some other friends over for dinner one night to show us some Korean cooking. It was really awesome, because not only was the food mega delicious, but it was also all very easy to make! She made one dish using rice cakes and chili paste, which I've been making on my own very frequently. When she made the dish, she used a sweet rice drink as the base fluid, then let it simmer with some chili paste to form a thick sauce, and then cooked the rice cakes in it.

I've been kind of experimenting with this format; using other ingredients such as spinach and hoisin (mainly because I don't have the rice drink she used to sweeten the sauce), but the other day I decided the try yo throw in a few small cubes of sweet potato, thinking the extra sweetness would work well in an already sweet and spicy dish. It was AWESOME! So I'm going to try to wing it and remember how the recipe went:

Brown rice cakes and sweet potato in chili paste

1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon hoisin
4 tablespoons chili paste
1/2 cup sweet potato, cubed
1 and 1/2 cups of rice cakes (any shape)

So you just mix the water, hoisin, and chili paste in a sauce pan and let that simmer a bit on medium/high heat.

Add the sweet potato cubes so they soften and absorb some moisture from the sauce. If it looks like the sauce is getting too thick, add maybe 2 tablespoons more water. The sweet potato will soak up some moisture, and you'll need to reconstitute that moisture for the rice cakes to suck upppp.

When the potatoes seem soft enough, to your likings of course, add the rice cakes, brown or white, and cook just a bit longer, until they become soft. Rice cakes cook really fast, so probably no more than 5-8 minutes.

Szechuan inspired potato and eggplant dish!

Somewhat loosely inspired by Szechuan flavors, the sauce is chili paste based and thick, with a hint of sweetness. Eggplant, Yukon golden potatoes, carrots and Shiitake mushrooms. On the side are some udon noodles with chili powder and dried seaweed. The two items actually went together very well! Successful dinner!!

BRONZE POURING! Our final metals project was a bronze pouring, which I was really excited about! I think I spent more time on this project than any other project this semester, maybe even this entire school year. The process required a few very time consuming steps.

STEP 1 The first step was carving our objects out of wax in order to create a cast to pour the bronze in. For this project, I decided to translate my illustrations of crystal twins into bronze figures. The carving process took a while, and I was being a bit crazy about getting the figures as smooth as possible.

STEP 2 The second step was to gate my creatures. There were larger, red wax-gates attached to the forms to allow the bronze to pour in, and smaller blue lines of wax to reach smaller parts of the creatures bodies, such as the extremities, especially the little toes. After this we attached the forms to cups by the gates, which is where the bronze would be poured into.

Accidentally over gated the contact twins, so I just removed the blue lines that were attached to the front and back legs.

STEP 3 The final step before the pour involved dipping the gated wax sculptures in some sort of crazy toxic-lime green fluid, a type of silica, to create a ceramic shell around the objects. We had to dip it in the silica, then dip it in a certain type of sand, then let it dry completely and repeat the process a total of 8 times. This took a ridiculously long amount of time. After each dip the wait ranged from 30 minutes to 2 hours before the next dip could occur.

STEP 4 Pouring bronze!! The sculptures were put in a kiln and heated until all the wax melted out. The the ceramic shells were transferred to sand pits, and the bronze was poured! It was really amazing to watch molten bronze being poured.

STEP 5
BEAUTIFUL! Once the bronze cooled, I cracked open the mold and picked away all the remaining silica mold to reveal my beaaauutifuull crystal twins. Thank goodness they didn't look like doo-doo!

The rest of the process will be posted later this week or next week. It'll involve removing the gates, sand blasting, and polishing, as well as any other touch up work and detailing!

My first ceramic creation!

Baby's first ceramic piece! I've been getting to know the ceramicists a lot better due to midnight cookie drop offs and late nights working on my bronze project. I love the ceramicists, bless their hearts!!

Anyway, so one of them taught me how to throw, and I made this little cup/bowl thing!! It still needs to be fired with the glaze on it, which should happen soon, but here it is before the first firing and before the color was added. The little drawing was done using the sgraffito technique.

All the ceramists have been helping me with the steps and giving me advice during this process,
so thanks guys, ya'll the best!

My favorite lunch evvveerr.

Dry fried some more tofu and then marinated it in a chili sauce I made, ontop a bed of brown rice. Sauteed some bok choy in garlic, olive oil, chili flakes, and a little bit of soy sauce. Little tomato and onion salad next to that, garnished with cilantro, olive oil, lime, pepper, and paprika. Second box just has some snacky things in it; oranges, raisins, almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds!

This actually ended up being really good, considering I wasn't really knowing what I was making!

I dry fried some tofu and let it sit in a container of red chili paste, soy sauce, lime, garlic, and water. Then I used some of the sauce from the tofu to cook a few slices of eggplant and broccoli. Once the eggplant and broccoli was done, I removed it from the pan, and fried the chili and lime-soaked tofu. Removed the tofu from the pan, fried the rice with a little bit of oil and sauce, then re-added the tofu, eggplant, and broccoli. Cooked for a little bit, then plated it and garnished with fresh lime, cilantro, and peanuts.

Crystal Head!

Ok! So I posted images of a steel crystal a while back, which resulted in my first metals project, the concept being a wall, and the produce being a cluster of crystals. Unfortunately that project lacked a lot of ME, meaning, my aesthetic, and I really didn't want to lose the crystal form so I decided to try to engage my aesthetic into these objects.

In my previous post about the altered book, there is an image of a crystal head. When beginning this metals project, the concept this time needing to relate to tower, I looked back to the image created in my altered book and decided to turn my crystal structures into crystal masks. I adopted the body suit used by my rock heads and created this piece of wearable, sculptural art!

There was a performance involved, related to a mythology I created about the crystal heads.

The mythology describes the crystal heads as underground dwellers who fantasize about what exists above their caves. They imagine themselves at the bottom of a tower of layers, and decide to explore the worlds above them. They dig through many different layers and eventually reach the surface of the Earth.

However, the crystal heads don't realize that the surface of the Earth is the last accessible layer; they look up and believe the next attainable layer is the blue layer above (the sky). Seeing the next layer above them, the crystal heads climb trees, mountains, and buildings, trying to reach the blue layer.

Eventually the crystal heads are defeated by gravity and many of them fall from their peeks and die on their impacts into earth's surface.

The tower desired by the rock heads suggests the undefined tower. While most towers are expected to have a peek, the idea of the undefined tower reflects the perception of the tower's audience. To us, the surface of the Earth would be the peek of the tower for the crystal heads, however without knowing the limitations of Earth, the crystal heads believed there to be more layers and a peek beyond the surface. And in their own sense it's true; there are layers beyond Earth's surface, but those layers are dependent on the viewer to be defined.

The perfornace was really silly. I'll try to upload the bit of video I have from it tomorrow night. For now, enjoy all these images I have!

Rock Head as it was meant to be!

I finally made the gold body suit that was intended to accompany my rock head!

Last night I made this golden form-fitting onesie for a performance in my metals class. The metals project, which involved a crystal-headed creature, adopted the golden body from my previously mentioned rock headed guys. Both the crystals and rocks have similar creation characteristics, so it made sense for them to share the same type of body.

Field Guide to Crystals!

A Field Guide to Crystals

In response to my altered book, I decided to take the information that I've been working with (like this information posted earlier!) and present it to an audience outside of the classroom. I made a total of six booklets titled Field Guide to Crystals; three about contact twins and the other three about penetration twins. They were printed on Vellum and due to expenses, I couldn't print more than six.

Each booklet has a front and back cover, title page introducing the crystal type and creature I associate it with, infromation sheet, and two DIY crystal paper cutouts. The paper cutouts come with instructions on how to assemble the given crystal structures (either contact or penetration crystals can be created with the cutout).

I'm really curious to see the response I get when putting these out for people to stumble upon. The day I distribute them, I'll create another post in order to encourage anyone who finds one and searches for my blog (which is listed on the back of the booklet) to respond and let me know they found the booklet and what their thoughts about it were! I'm looking for an out of critique response, and see what and how a general audience views my work.

I hope to present more work publicly, but for now this will be my test run!

Altered Book; Crystals!

For my sketchbook class we were assigned to alter a book, and then use our resulted project to expand upon the content of our alterations into a new project of our own likings.

The book I chose to alter was an old children's picture book about a monkey named Pete. Honestly, I totally ignored the content of the book, and more so focused on the structure of the book. I looked at the book as a landscape of fractals, relating to the crystal forms I've become interested in, and used each plane (a two page spread) to paste images of crystals, creatures, and other geometric forms relating to my research in crystals.

The resulting series of images inspired the next project I'll be posting, which takes the information I

experimented with visually in my altered book and refines it to a more user friendly structure.

This past weekend, while taking photos of Mel and Max in the rock head masks, I got to paint a little bit of Max's shed! Mel and I both contributed to Max's family shed which is covered in paintings by friends and family. I didn't finish my painting, but I'll definitely be back again to work on it some more. Max and his parents saw my creation myths post and I thought I would paint the monoliths and a rock carrier for them. ;-D

Cardboard caterpillar automaton!

This was a project done last semester where the requirement was to work with cardboard. I decided to attempt to create an automaton, which is self-operating mechanical toy. I was really interested in Alexander Calder's pull toys and circus, and the basis of my work for that class dealt with play and interaction.

It took a little toying around with before I got the mechanics right, but here it is! I think it was really successful for what I was wanting out of this project. I made something functional! It's entirely constructed with cardboard with the exception of the little sticks that support the caterpillar's segments (they are wooden dowel rods covered in cardboard) and the adhesive materials, which were glue and tape.

Walking Cyprus!

Last semester in a materials based class I tried wood carving for the first time and it was AWESOME! Took forever, and I got so many blisters but it was worth it! I bought some stumps at a lumber yard and though I was feeling kind of ambitious for this project I was only able to make one Cyprus seedling. And I didn't even slack off or anything, it just took so long to make one, I didn't have time to make any more!

So the story with this describes the transportation and growth of the Cyprus trees. I'll have to post pictures of my sketch for this sculpture, but basically I imagined these pods with little baby seedlings inside growing from adult Cyprus tress. When the pods would fall to the ground, the seedlings would stand up on their two little legs and run through the forest in search of a good spot to grow. Once they find their spot, their flip themselves over and plant themselves into the ground, where their bodies round out and branch out into a stubby little sapling and then eventually grow into a Cyprus tree.

The legs are jointed and can kick back and forth. The body and legs were carved and sanded and then finished with some finishing wax. The body was one stump while the shell was another stump. For the shell I cut the general half-circle shape out on a ban saw and then chiseled away at the insides to hollow it out. Once I got my desired form I used wood glue and a nail gun to reattach Cyprus bark to it's exterior. Shoved the little dude in the shell and done!

Rock Heads!

The Rock Heads
For a performance based project this past month I decided to reenact one of the myths from my Creation Myths about Earth's Geologies book. I chose to reenact the myth describing the creation of Monoliths. This involved the construction of rock heads!

For this, I used a beach ball as my base and layer it with newspaper, papier-mache, Bondo, Spackle, and house paint. Although the result was fairly successful (the larger head cracked near the base of the entrance hole) I'm kind of hoping to find an easier and less expensive way of creating a durable large full-face-covered mask.

My friends Mel and Max kindly modeled the masks for me! Dang, they are just the best! The performance involved more than just wearing the mask though. It was the entire reenactment of the burial process of the rock heads, and during the performance I took off some of my clothes and tried to bury myself in different areas around our classroom's courtyard. The performance was kind of nut-zo, but It helped a lot in realized the future of this piece. Point is, I don't have images of the performance because it was nut-zo.

Creation Myths about Earth's Geologies; Continued

I finally bought a camera, so I've been able to photograph some sculptures I've done this past year! Alright! Back in January I posted images from my book, this book, about Earth's geologies. The sculptural component of that piece was the book and the pedestal that I created to present my myths.

The pedestal was created with cedar, as was the book, and I created the neck of the stand using a wood lathe to round out and taper a 4x4. The finishing coat on the pedestal was sanding sealer while the book was finished with finishing wax.

This is a body suit I created that exaggerated a standard form I work with to have a large dragging belly and long neck.

I sewed the body suit and created the stomach and head with wire and papier-mâché. Embroidered and painted the face, sand and fluff in the lower segment of the belly.

Steel Diamond, assembled!

I'm making another one this weekend. It'll be a bit larger and a different type of steel (I think it's coated in something or treated with something to make it rust less)

I used a MIG weld and 16 gauge rusted steel. Cleaned the edges a bit, should have cleaned them much more though, and then assembled it.

FINALLY STARTED MY METALS PROJECT.

It took way too long for me to get motivated, but I've finally started cutting my steel! For my first Metals project I've decided to construct two crystalline forms out of steel. Originally I was set on making spheres but I think what made me so unmotivated in the first place was trying to figure out how to weld AND how to construct a decent looking sphere out of planes. I'm much more attacted to these crystal shapes anyway.

These are my first cuts laid out!

They look like a piece of a beautiful shooting Jewish Star!!! Make a wish, ya'll!

I actually can't wait to weld them together! I think I'll MIG weld the structures. I'm a better at MIG than gas, though I still have to practice both.

Welding is like a whole new world, I think if it goes over well, It'll be something I do much more of.

Good gracious do I love cabbage soup. I could run a train on it for a week! And I typically do because it just lasts so long! I have a mental recipe for my usual cabbage soup, but I'm not sure if I've decide to post recipes? This ain't no vaygan cookin' blog, dang! Just the things I make, and this counts as something I made...maybe I'll post recipes. I'll think about it, but for now, just look at that beautiful concoction of cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, paprika, cumin, thyme, sage, loads of other herbs and water!

I found something I apparently wrote?

The other day I was perusing old sketchbooks and in some middle page of a less than half filled sketchbook I found something I apparently wrote, but I have no memory of ever writing it! It was from 2007, and it was a poem..I think?! I don't write poems! I never did! But it was in my hand writing. It's really strange, and the poem honestly makes no sense at all. I made this based on two lines of the "poem", thinking it would help inspire me for a future project. (whatever)

and pulled out the organ I never knew

The Creation of Mounds

Before you know about mounds, you need to know about meteorites. There are two types of meteorites; primitive and differentiated. Primitive meteorites are meteorites whose composition of metals, minerals, and space dust has been unchanged since its formation. Differentiated meteorites have been altered by heat and pressure, therefore it's composition is processed and all melted together to make one consistent material.

The creation of mounds starts on a foreign planet, when an extraterrestrial creature accidentally stumbles and begins orbiting it's planet at a very low altitude. When this happens, small stones, rocks, and pebbles magically adhere to the creatures body and tumble around with the orbiting creature. This phenomenon creates a katamari, a magical adhesive ball where anything smaller than it sticks to its surface!

After a few orbits, the creature will become entirely contained in a ball of space matter and eventually launched out of its planet's orbit and into space! Sometimes, in our case, the katamari meteorite will get close enough to Earth that it collides into our surface and implants its self into the crust! Over time, the landing site becomes covered in dirt and foliage to create a mound.

This mound is the resting site of the fallen katamari meteorite and space creature. The pressure and heat from the Earth fuse the space matter together to form a differentiated shell around the hibernating creature, keeping it stable until the day it can emerge from it's shell and create a new life on Earth. Though this isn't the death of the space creature, these mounds are sometimes referred to as katamari burial grounds.

The Creation of Moving Rocks

In the Death Valley desert in Eastern California, there are rocks that have been known to move when no one is looking. The reason they move isn't because of wind or ice, but because underneath the rocks are little fleshy creatures! These creatures have skin that is too sensitive to be exposed to the sun, so in order for them to exist in the desert they tie rocks to their backs and bury themselves underground.

During the day, the rocks absorb heat from the sun and the creatures convert this stored heat into usable energy. When the sun goes down, they travel the desert with the energy supplied by their rock-backs.

The Creation of Monoliths

On Easter Island there are giant stone heads that stick out of the ground, and all around the world elsewhere, there are other large stones much like the heads, yet without any features. Any large stone that is a monolith isn't actually a stone at all; it's a creature who use to walk the Earth naked!

These big headed creatures would walk around completely nude, and because they had no hair like most other fleshy animals, they become so embarrassed of their nudity that they buried their bodies under the Earth and only kept their heads poking out. Back then, the Earth was so rich with nutrients that they could survive for thousands of years without needing to eat! The nutrients just seeped into their fleshy skin and kept them nourished and content for their whole lives.

The Creation of Geodes

There exists a creature that consumes food; just like us! However, unlike us, when this creature digests his food, his body compresses the nutrients into a beautiful little ball and sounds it with waste. The creature then poops out the entire nutrient/waste conglomerate, thus creating a beautiful geode, which i like to refer to as a poop stone!

However, because the creature never absorbs any nutrients (because he's always pooping them out) he eventually dies due to malnutrition. On the creatures last poop, instead of pooping out nutrients he poops out his soul into the poop stone and soon after dies. The soul will hibernate in the poop stone for however long it takes for someone or something to come along and crack the poop stone open. Then the creature is born again, like a phoenix, to continue the geode making cycle all over again!

This is the cover of my book of creation myths. I milled, laminated, and waxed a few pieces of cedar, then bound it together with the illustrations inside.

I also designed and build a podium that the book rests on, also made out of cedar, however I don't have any images of it at the moment. Hopefully I'll get some up later!

Each of the creation myths have some sort of narrative I say when I present them. There are five stories in total.

Abstract Geology Sketchbook

I took a class called Concepts and Strategies during the Fall Semester of 2010, and one of the assignments was to create something based on the term geology. We could really do anything we wanted as long as it in someway reverenced geology. This is the sketchbook I made for that particular project, and it ended up evolving into a more long term project that I intent to expand on this year.

Basically, I researched different geological features on Earth, as well as *OUTER SPACE*, and made up creation myths about those geologies. Most of the research I have in my sketch book didn't make it to the final project (which I'll post later) but I don't intend on abandoning them. They'll have their day..some day.
